Singapore - When it comes to the war for talent, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) often find themselves at a disadvantage compared to the bigger players in the market. But SMEs should leverage on their unique traits and communicate them to potential candidates.

In a latest survey conducted by StrategiCom and Singapore National Employers Federation, job seekers say the freedom to work on their own initative is the most attractive aspect in a job.

Recognition and appreciation of employee's work came in second, followed by opportunity for long-term career progression. An attractive compensation and benefits package was only ranked as fourth most important attribute, with training and development coming in fifth.

The survey respondents also said that the size of the business is not a concern, rating "a small organisation" as one of the least important attributes when jobseeking.

Wilson Chew, CEO of a B2B branding specialist StrategiCom, says, "It is clear from the findings of our study that SMEs must focus their attention not on raising salary offers, but on building a forward-looking brand to attract, and by default, help retain quality staff."

To compete, Chew says SMEs should first identify their company's distinct and unique attributes which separates them from their competitors. Some of the common attributes for SME companies include a flexible workplace, a higher level of autonomy and a flat working organisation.

Following that, companies should communicate these attributes consistently all throughout the recruitment process - right from the interview all the way till the person is hired. Chew recommends using various platforms such as the company's corporate website, job advertisements and even a public relations firm to reach out to the public.

"When CEOs go out from time to time and meet the media, they should share about the unique attributes of their organisation. Any kind of platform that allows them to reach potential talent should be siezed and those unique attributes should be communicated consistently," he says.

The survey was conducted among 150 respondents comprising of three demographics: MBA students with working experience, undergraduate students in their honours year and existing working professionals.
