MALAYSIA
Malaysia - After five months of appeals from manufacturing companies, the Malaysian government said that it will allow the recruitment of 100,000 new foreign workers into the country.
However, in a report by The Star, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said the government is still committed to reducing the number of foreign workers, adding that the numbers have already been reduced from 2.2 million to 1.6 million within the last year.
“We will have to do it [reduce the numbers] gradually because the demand from companies for foreign workers has been increasing after production picked up following the economic recovery,” Subramaniam told reporters.
He added that the government only approved the applications as a temporary measure in order to overcome workforce shortages, as locals were not keen on taking up the job offers.
