Siemens looks to grow headcount in India

India - Siemens is looking to increase its workforce in India to 25,000 in a bid to tap into the green energy market. The India operations is also expected to manufacture engineering products for sale as well.

According to Reuters, Siemens slashed approximately 17,000 jobs worldwide over two years in a bid to reduce costs by 1.2 billion euros (S$2.52 billion) from its 2007 level.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Peter Loscher, president and chief executive of Siemens AG said that the company's mission is to take full advantage of the infrastructure development that exists in India. "We are taking advantage of this opportunity by adding specific products tailored to India," he added.

The India operations is slated to be the manufacturing base for a number of Siemens products, including ones in signalling technology and steam turbines. "These centres will also be responsible for the entire value chain, from product design, development and production to sales and marketing in India and abroad," said Armin Bruck, head of Siemens India.

The company employs about 400,000 worldwide.
