Wal-Mart to create 6,500 jobs, General Motors to hire 1,000

Global - Global employment figures are set to rise with Wal-Mart Stores saying it plans to create around 6,500 jobs in Canada while General Motors would hire up to 1,000 people in India.

Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores plans to open around 35 to 40 supercentres in Canada this year. The projects which involve creating new stores and relocating existing ones will generate around 6,500 store and construction jobs. The retailer also plans to expand its operations in Latin America with a sustainable, refrigerated distribution centre in Balzac, Alberta. The centre will create 1,400 jobs when it opens in the third quarter of 2010, reported BusinessWeek.

Over in Asia, General Motors (GM) said yesterday it will hire up to 1,000 people in India by the end of 2010 to meet the high local demand for its automotives, reported Wall Street Journal. Out of the total recruitment figures, GM will hire around 150 to 200 engineers for its powertrain design centre while the remaining 800 new hires would be posted to its two factories. The carmaker expects to sell 120,000 vehicles in the local market this year, a 43% increase from the previous year.
