India - India would see a 35% increase from the current fiscal year in number of jobs available in 2010 to 2011, with nearly a million jobs expected to be created.

The annual Employment Trends Survey by human resources firm Ma Foi Management Consultants said healthcare and pharmaceutical firms would lead the hiring. The sector plans to add 295,000 jobs to its current workforce of 3.37 million. The hospitality and travel industry would add 137,000 jobs on top of its six million employee base while real estate and construction companies with 730,000 employees in total would hire another 136,000 people.

HR respondents for the information technology and information technology-enabled services sector, on the other hand, said they plan to add only 97,000 jobs to the current 1.8 million. Similarly, the education, training and consultancy sector would add 83,000 jobs while HR in manufacturing companies plan to hire 68,000. Banking, financial services and insurance will increase headcount to around 46,000.

But E. Balaji, chief executive of Ma Foi in India, said hiring would only pick up in the second quarter of 2010-11 as companies remain wary of the economy recovery. Madhavi Lall, human resources head for India and South Asia for Standard Chartered, concurred. "Companies will pick up in hiring in May-June. People will wait to see the first quarter performance."

Standard Chartered plans to add 2,500 people in India this year, which is similar to its headcount hires in 2009. India's economy is estimated to grow at 7.2% in 2009 to 2010 and at 8.5% in 2010 to 2011.
