Nominations open for Work-Life Excellence Award 2010

The Tripartite Committee on Work-Life Strategy (TriCom), chaired by Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower Mr Hawazi Daipi and comprising members from the Government, employers, unions and professionals bodies, is calling for applications for the biennial Work-Life Excellence Award (WLEA) 2010.

Into its third year, the WLEA is the only national award for Work-Life harmony and recognises organisations with successful Work-Life strategies which helped employees better manage their professional and personal responsibilities as well as contributed to organisational success.

The TriCom welcomes applications from all employers including MNCs and SMEs. The WLEA categories are:

Under the Corporate Awards category:

Work-Life Excellence Award - The Work-Life Excellence Award recognises successful employers for their continued commitment to helping employees harmonise work and personal lives through effective and innovative Work-Life strategies.

Work-Life Achiever Award - The Work-Life Achiever Award commends organisations for their efforts in implementing Work-Life strategies and encouraging excellence by promoting Work-Life Harmony within the organisation.

The Tricom was set up in September 2000 to drive the promotion of Work-Life Harmony in Singapore. Member organisations include Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME), Employer Alliance (EA), Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), Public Service Division (PSD), Singapore Business Federation (SBF), Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI), Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) and the Singapore Training and Development Association.

Under the Individual Award category:

Work-Life Leadership Award - The Work-Life Leadership Award honours individuals who have demonstrated deep commitment and outstanding leadership qualities in making Work-Life Harmony a reality in their organisation and beyond.

Nominations will be judged on how these employers have adopted Work-Life strategies, as well as the effectiveness and impact of the initiatives. The categories include flexible work arrangements (which were also widely adopted by companies during H1N1 period), leave benefits, employee support programmes, and also infrastructure and facilities within the companies that help employees manage their Work-Life needs.

Past winners include City Development Limited (CDL), Sheraton Towers Singapore, Shell Eastern Petroleum, Yayasan Mendaki, Lucky Joint Construction Pte Ltd, as well as, Rajah and Tann LLP.

Hawazi Daipi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower & Health and Chairman for the Tripartite Committee on Work-Life Strategy said, “Since the last awards in 2008, workers and employers have tackled the economic downturn and for some companies, work-life harmony took a backseat. With the economic recovery, and the awards this year, we hope to encourage more companies to re-focus on Work-Life Harmony and to make this a priority. This “marrying” of work life balance will result in a more committed and productive workforce, and a win all around for employers as well as employees.”

Nominations for the WLEA will close on 31 March 2010. The winners will be announced at the Work-Life Excellence Award Gala Dinner graced by the Minister for Manpower, Gan Kim Yong, in August 2010.
