Day One

The event was started off by Henry Lee, managing director, Sony Corporation of Hong Kong, with a keynote on Sony’s talent strategy and the “Kando” spirit.

“Empowerment is important. Knowing that they’re becoming a valuable employee, not just a fresh graduate,” he told the delegates with regards to managing young potential. "If they’re passionate about the brand, they’re less likely to give up when they encounter difficulties,” he added.

Next on stage was Jeff Lam, director, organization and talent development – Asia Pacific at Starbucks Coffee Company. He spoke to the delegates about the role top management can and should play in talent management and development.

Next, delegates heard from Peter Finch, managing director – Greater China, Cubiks-GraduACE about an objective approach to talent management.

The final speaker of the day was Winnie Lai, human resources director, 7-Eleven Hong Kong and Macau, Dairy Farm Group. Lai revealed the new rules of employee engagement and how to use digital HR to inspire a breakthrough. She shared a few of the ways in which the company is using technology to help engage staff members.

Day Two

Kickstarting day two of the conference, Teddy Liu, general manager – corporate and talent development, New World Development, took to the stage with a presentation on change management. He talked about taking a holistic strategy from staff development and engagement to organisation development.

Staying with the topic of engagement, Neil Chowings, managing director, Work Group/ThirtyThree, spoke to the delegates about how digital solutions can address key attraction and engagement challenges.

"You can’t let digital solutions replace your current engagement strategies. It has to complement them, not replace them," he warned.

After a break, Bernard Coulaty, international author and speaker, former VP of HR, APAC, founder and CEO, MOST engaged consulting, shared his views on designing a new employee experience at work.

He explained that one of the causes of limited engagement is that we confuse satisfaction, motivation, and engagement. "I’m sorry to say, a lucky draw might bring satisfaction, but it doesn’t create engagement. The question is, what can you do to increase ownership for employees at work?"

Up next, Bob Charles, managing director, CXA Hong Kong shared his insights on how organisations have implemented wellness in Hong Kong.

He told the room: "In Hong Kong, we’re already spending lots of money in this area. But we’re not really spending it on wellness, but on illness."

After lunch, delegates were welcomed back with a keynote presentation by Kyon Chow, head of human resources, Asia, Johnson Electric, who provided insights on how to attract, engage, and unleash the power of a multi-generational workforce.

Following Chow's presentation, pannellists Winnie Lai, human resources director, 7-Eleven Hong Kong and Macau, Dairy Farm Group; CY Chan, associate director – talent management and organisation development and co-owner, Hong Kong Broadband Network; and Debbie Mannas, group head of human resources, Wallem Group, discussed "Winning the war for talent 2.0: Through sustainable succession planning".

Moderated by Anthony Wong, editor, Human Resources, one of the topics they discussed was how to retain management trainees after they finish the training programme.

After the panel, CY Chan, associate director – talent management and organisation development and co-owner, Hong Kong Broadband Network, spoke about engaging talent through developing “Intrapreneurship”. He introduced the room to the contradiction between how we run our business and how we run talent engagement.

After a quick break, delegates learnt how to compensate employees in the information age from Byron Y. Lee, assistant professor of management, CEIBS.

He told the room: "Compensation should never be your key differentiator, because someone will outcompete you. Having said that, when we think about our talent strategy, we have to think about how we should pay people."

For the final session of the day, Debbie Mannas, group head of human resources, Wallem Group, shared her view on the future of talent in Hong Kong.

Mannas talked the delegates through some statistics. "In 27 years, the median age in Hong Kong will be 50. Around the same time, Hong Kong’s population will start declining. We have to think of this in terms of availability of talent, if we want Hong Kong to grow."
