Salary and benefits, work-life balance, and financial health are the top three traits of an ideal employer in HK

Having a very good reputation, remote work options, and giving back to society were ranked last. 

More than three in five (62%) Hongkongers ranked attractive salary & benefits as the most important employee value proposition (EVP) they seek in an ideal employer, according to recent research. 

Work-life balance comes in a close second at 60%, followed by the financial health of the organisation (52%), job security (51%), and pleasant work atmosphere/career progression/good training(45%). Notably, close to half of the respondents (43%) cited having a safe work environment during the pandemic as an important EVP factor.

Having a very good reputation, remote work options, and giving back to society were ranked last. 

Even when work-life balance ranked as the second most important EVP factor, the average employer in Hong Kong received a low rating (ranked eighth) on this driver from respondents. The top three factors employers can offer were noted as being financially healthy, providing a safe work environment during the pandemic, and having a very good reputation. 

Therefore, the top gaps between an employee's expectation and an employer's offer are work-life balance, attractive salary and benefits, COVID-19 safe work environment, and very good reputation. The last two items are not as sought after as what's available in the market. 

When compared to all other groups, women and higher-educated employees also found work-life balance to be more important than attractive salary & benefits. Meanwhile, respondents aged between 18 and 34 years old ranked work-life balance as the most important EVP factor.

The 2021 Randstad Employer Brand Research polled more than 190,000 respondents across 34 markets, including 2,603 who are based in Hong Kong in January 2021.
