Singapore leads as a 'city of opportunity'

Singapore’s economic and cultural policies and practices have been lauded as being one of the most competitive worldwide.

According to the sixth edition of PricewaterhouseCooper’s Cities of Opportunity report, Singapore came in third place among the 30 cities surveyed to emerge as one of the highest performing cities worldwide.

Moving up four places since the last edition of the study, Singapore was beaten only by London and New York, which took the first and second places respectively.

The report evaluated cities across 10 different categories, which included variables such as intellectual capital and innovation, technological readiness and the ease of doing business, among others.

“Singapore ranked highest among Asian cities, and is one of only four cities, along with London, Stockholm and Sydney, to finish first in more than one indicator, taking the top spot in the ease of doing business and transportation and infrastructure categories,” the report stated.

In addition, the report found Singapore improved six places to be ranked third in the city gateway indicator, demonstrating its importance as a global gateway, just after London and Beijing.

“Singapore’s performance is remarkable,” Yee Chen Fah, partner and government and public services leader, PwC Singapore, said.

“Our consistent high scores are indicative that we have matured as a global contender and a true global city.”

The report also praised Singapore for its development and maintenance of solid infrastructure and housing policies.

“It is particularly telling that Singapore ranks first in the critical variable that measures the availability, cost, and quality of housing (which shows a strong, positive correlation with the overall social and economic health of a city),” it stated.
