TripAdvisor reveals world’s best airlines for 2019

For the second consecutive year, Singapore Airlines topped the Travellers’ Choice award for the globe’s best international carrier.

One satisfied passenger said: “I used Singapore Airlines three times on a recent trip to New Zealand and back, and was so impressed, especially with the consistency of standards. I had plenty of legroom, the food was excellent and the crew so friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much bother, and often my needs were anticipated before I could make a request.”

Qatar Airways leap-frogged to second place, usurping Air New Zealand, which dropped to eighth on the list – although the Kiwi carrier won the best premium economy award.

According to one Qatar Airways frequent flyer: “Even though I travelled economy class, I still got a pre-flight drink. Now that is service!”

Asian airlines featured prominently in the listings with Taiwanese carrier EVA Air coming in third, Japan Airways (JAL) at five and All Nippon Airways (ANA) at 10 – both Japanese carriers being commended for their great food and service. For the second year in a row, Cathay Pacific didn’t make the top 10.

Brazilian airline Azul ranked seventh, while the highest US entry was Southwest Airlines (sixth) – gaining favour with its offer of two check-in bags included in the ticket price.

British airline Jet2.com has found a niche for itself in the competitive European budget carrier sector, ranking ninth, and winning praise for its efficiency and ample legroom.

Revealing travellers’ preferred carriers for the third consecutive year, the TripAdvisor website recognised airlines from around the globe, using an algorithm that determines the quantity and quality of airline reviews submitted by travellers over the previous 12 months.
