Most of the staff at Twitter Inc.'s Hong Kong office are likely to lose their jobs. As part of a global restructuring, the company is moving its business to Singapore.
The expected job cuts were first reported by Hong Kong Free Press, who spoke to a source at the company. Although the source denied the office would completely close down, and would not comment on layoffs, it did confirm that all of Twitter's advertiser sales support and media partnership operations would move to Singapore.
The source added that China managing director Kathy Chen would stay on.
Twitter opened the Hong Kong branch in March 2015 to serve as the head office for the Greater China region in hopes of growing its business in Asia. Around the same time, the company opened its Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore and announced plans to add over 100 jobs across the Asia Pacific region.
Now, the company is struggling. Last week, it announced it would be cutting 9% of its workforce, as it tries to cope with dwindling revenue growth.
According to the source, despite moving most of its operations to Singapore, the Greater China remains an important part of Twitter's network as one of its largest and fastest growing regions in the world.
