WDA and SMU partner to groom HR leaders in Singapore

The Workforce Development Agency (WDA) has appointed Singapore Management University (SMU) as its first university partner to offer the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) in human resources and in leadership and people management.

The collaboration aims to develop more HR leaders in Singapore and empower those in the profession to become more strategic business partners.

To signify the collaboration, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed yesterday between WDA's CEO Ng Cher Pong, and SMU's president, Professor Arnoud De Meyer (pictured).

The HR Graduate Certification will equip trainees with competencies in talent acquisition, learning & development, succession planning, compensation and benefits, performance evaluation, talent management and strategic HR.

In his speech at the event, Ng said this collaboration was an "important milestone" in developing HR leaders in Singapore, who play a key role in building strong, growing organisations.

"HR is therefore an important foundation for our economy as we continue to raise the capability and productivity of our local workforce," said Ng.

As at May this year, more than 8,000 trainees have completed HR WSQ programmes and around 18,500 Statements of Attainment (SOA) have been awarded, leading up to more 200 Specialised HR certifications and 500 HR WSQ Qualifications.

This new collaboration will benefit over 400 professionals, managers and executivesm and SMU’s Centre for Professionals Studies aims to issue over 1,000 SOAs by April 2017 for the HR Graduate Certification programme, and more than 500 SOAs for LPM WSQ programmes by December 2017.

De Meyer said SMU is delighted to value add to the country's manpower development.

"Other than building depth in the respective HR disciplines, the programmes will provide the vital linkage back to corporate objectives and ensure that the training in people management practices are in sync with overall business goals,” he said.
