With Hong Kong staring down the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hasbro is one of the companies in the city that has adopted a work-from-home arrangement. Timothy Bean, vice president of HR, Hasbro, shares his thoughts on remote working and tips on how to excel in this new normal.

What is the work-from-home essential you can’t live without?
My mouse. It’s a little thing but I really don’t like the mouse on a laptop!

Have you created any new daily habits during these months?
I try to contact a different person outside my team each day to check how they are. Working remotely can be an isolating experience for some and it’s important to make sure we are checking in on each other.

One productivity tip for remote working.
Schedule time in your calendar each day just for you to focus on your work. With more meetings each day, you can get to the end of the day without any time for you. I book it the week before (Outlook actually does it for me).

Have you encountered any challenges working from home?
The challenge is separating home from work as your time seems to blend together. You check email when you wake up and you are still working into the night. I miss the break you get leaving the office and travelling home.

One life lesson/leadership lesson you learnt from the pandemic.
We need to build resilience into everything we do. Our processes, our structures, our work environment all need to balance our need for efficiency with the ability to be flexible as we build the next normal.

Is remote working here to stay?
I think flexible working is here to stay. I see the future being a mix of working remotely but also going to an office because you have a particular task you need to do. Offices will be more of a collaboration space than an individual workspace.
