Winning Secrets: How engagement & wellness drove healthier results in AIA Singapore's employees

In 2021, 1,399 physical activities, 1,440 online health assessments, and 1,217 fitness challenges were completed by select AIA employees.

Since setting roots in Asia in 1919, the AIA Group has seen its footprint expand across regions, with Singapore among its first two expansions back in 1931.

The Group's wellness programme, AIA Vitality, currently serves more than 100,000 customers by helping them achieve their fitness milestones, positive behavioural changes, and more.

At the 10th annual edition of HR Excellence Awards, Singapore in 2022, AIA Singapore took home the gold award for Excellence in Corporate Wellness.

Following the win, Sharon Tan, Head of AIA Vitality, tells us how the organisation is helping its own workforce achieve its brand promise, through a greater focus on engagement and wellness - how this has panned out for them.

Q Congratulations on the achievement! Could you take us through the highs and lows of your winning strategy?

AIA Singapore Vitality team’s strategy is grounded by AIA’s brand promise of enabling healthier, longer, better lives (HLBL) for people. This commitment is extended to enhancing corporate wellness and supporting corporate customers in uplifting their wellness in workplaces. We also took it upon ourselves to extend the same breadth and quality of services offered to corporate customers to our employees and take care of our employees’ wellbeing.

When the pandemic hit and all face-to-face activities were halted, the challenge for the team was to explore ways to enable companies to digitally engage employees while socially distanced. As safety measures begin to ease in Singapore, companies were looking for more face-to-face activities to breathe life into the workplace again. Through the ups and downs of the pandemic, our AIA Vitality team has been here to support our corporate customers and will continue to journey alongside them through good and challenging times.

Q How did the HR team identify and align the business & employee needs, and craft this perfect solution?

Employees are the cornerstone of AIA Singapore and critical to our mission of bringing HLBL to people. We owe it to their tireless efforts to ensure service continuity for customers even at the height of the lockdown. The AIA Vitality team worked closely with the HR team where we identified two areas of focus: 1) engagement and 2) wellness.

Noting that AIA Vitality is an innovative employee engagement platform, we married the two components to provide support that employees truly need in tackling both their physical and mental challenges brought about by COVID-19.

Q Could you share the results that your strategy has delivered – be it on the business, HR, or people side?

AIA Vitality achieved success in driving employee engagement and positively influencing the health outcomes of employees and customers. In 2021, there were 1,399 physical activities, 1,440 online health assessments, and 1,217 fitness challenges that were completed by AIA employees who are AIA Vitality members. This led to positive clinical results for both AIA employees and customers including improvements in glucose levels, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure levels.

Q What is your message to all the stakeholders who have supported you in this journey?

We are cognisant that the journey to enable HLBL for all is not one that can be accomplished alone. With that, we are very grateful to our employees, our customers, and community who recognised the value in why we do what we do. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

Q What are you most excited about when you think about the future of HR?

When thinking about the future of HR, the challenges and opportunities ahead are what excite me the most. For instance, with the emergence of hybrid working, some organisations have continued with this arrangement even as we transition to endemic. It will be imperative to navigate new ways of working cautiously as AIA Vitality continues to work closely with HR teams to introduce activities comprising engagement and wellness to engage employees.

Corporate wellness remains a key focus for AIA Vitality, and we look forward to shaping the next generation of workplace culture that prioritises wellbeing.
