With the year coming to a close, the busiest travel season has finally approached us, with many of us feeling the desire to explore a different city.
In that vein, Expedia recently revealed data of the current trends during the busiest travel season with the top travel destinations for the year, along with an early outlook for those planning to travel during the 2025 Chinese New Year (CNY) break. Ranking among the top 10 destinations for Singapore travellers in the season is neighbour Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, based on flight searches analysed, for its offer of strong seasonal savings.
Ranking alongside the Malaysian capital were the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc, and Bangkok in Thailand.
According to further data, many Singapore travellers are looking at various cities in China and on a lookout for off-season deals this year-end. A majority of these popular destinations are known to be cold and wintery locations, such as Tromso (+53%) and Atlanta (+42%), with Asian cities heavily in the mix.
The top winter spots travellers are considering include Japan's Sapporo (+17%) and Tokyo (+13%), as well as Bangkok, Thailand (+2%); while the fastest growing places in terms of popularity are China's Shanghai (+36%), Guangzhou (+22%), and Shenzen (+17%).

Most popular destinations for travel during CNY 2025
Apart from the above, Expedia also noted that long holiday plans are expected to increase during the CNY period next year, given that the festival falls on a Wednesday and Thursday. Based on flight searches, Expedia shares that top favourite country to visit are Phu Quoc (+170%), Chiang Rai (+53%), Guam (+37%), Chiang Mai (+35%) and Beijing (+31%).
2025 travel trends
In 2025, detour destinations are expected to be a trendy way to travel as travellers book locations near popular hotspots, making day trips to these attractions convenient.
Additionally, it is expected that travellers would make an intentional trip down to specific countries to obtain goods that are not available in their home country, or items they cannot go without — whether it’s a viral chocolate bar from Dubai, butter from France, skincare products from Korea or Japanese candy.
