Faces of HR: ING Hubs' Marie Antonette Valenzuela believes a blended approach to talent development is vital in transforming top talent

"As a first step, it is critical for the HR lead to be able to facilitate drawing out from the business, and articulate how will their business look like two to three years from now," she shares.

Coming up with solutions that is not based on data may lead to wasted time, effort, and resources, and may not be able to address the root cause of issues faced in the workplace, Marie Antonette "Anto" Valenzuela, Head of Human Resources, ING Hubs Philippines (pictured above) shares.

Therefore, she believes, creating a more blended and balanced approach to talent development plays a crucial role in transforming today's top talent.

Having graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Legal Management and Master's in Psychology from Ateneo de Manila University, Anto assumed the role of Head of Human Resources at ING Hubs Philippines in February 2024.

Prior to her role, Anto has led multiple leaderships roles, such as Executive Director.

Ahead of her session at the inaugural Transform Talent Philippines 2024, Anto sits down with HRO's Mary Ann Bundukin in a series dedicated to showcasing top event speakers.

She talks about the importance of having HR leaders be able to facilitate drawing out from the business, and articulate how the business will look like in two to three years' time.

Q Thinking back to your first day in HR, what is the most important learning that sticks with you until today?

You need to understand the employee feedback and business requirement (based on concrete data points), in order to design and develop appropriate HR programmes, solutions, and services.

At times, leaders and HR can get ahead of themselves because of urgent business needs or employee issues. Coming up with a solution that is not based on data, may lead to wasted time and resources, and still not being able to address the root cause of an issue or a problem.

Q What steps do you believe are necessary to transform today's talent into the talent that the business needs?

A blended approach to talent development is still key – using forward-looking capabilities and skills framework. As a first step, it is critical for the HR lead to be able to facilitate drawing out from the business and articulate how their business will look like two to three years from now.

  • What capabilities and skills do their employees need?
  • What experiences do they need to have to acquire these?
  • What does this mean for their career?

Q Could you share emerging trends that you believe will have the most significant impact on HR in the next few years?

Manager and employee HR self-service platforms will continue to evolve, mature, and become more sophisticated.

Hybrid work will continue, so how we can deepen employee engagement in this environment will have an impact to retention.

Managers will, more and more, be the ‘first line HR’ for their team members.

Employees’ personal needs, work environment preferences and lifestyle will require personalised and flexible benefits and work arrangement.

Emerging skills of the future will be required, and a new generation of workforce will expect new (progressive) career pathways.

Q What are you most looking forward to in your session at #TransformTalentPH?

Looking forward to hearing other thought leaders share their best practices; And likewise, be able to share what our journey has been like at ING.
