Google’s head of HR steps down

Eileen Naughton, head of human resources at Google will step down from her role following alleged tensions between employees and top executives. It is understood that she will stay on with the tech giant but her new role or start date has yet to be specified.

Naughton, who has been at the company since 2006 – four of which were as VP for people operations – has had a challenging time of it in recent years.

She had to deal with employee anger over Google’s alleged handling of sexual harassment claims, sacking of employees who organised protests against the company, and the cancellation of weekly meetings at which employees raised sensitive topics with management, it was reported in Fortune.

She's also reportedly had to handle employee complaints about Google’s decision to work on projects such as a censored search engine for China and a lack of employee diversity.

In 2018, around 20,000 of the tech giant’s staff staged a symbolic walk out triggered by Google’s alleged mismanagement of sexual misconduct complaints.

In following months, Naughton led an effort to make it easier for employees to report misconduct and also introduced a new programme that enabled victims to bring a buddy with them to HR when filing a complaint – as well as during the investigative process.

Naughton’s tenure as head of HR at Google took place during an impressive period of growth for the search engine – with its workforce growing by more than 65% to almost 120,000 worldwide.
