The proposed Gig Workers Bill aims to provide stronger legal and social protections for more than 1.12mn gig workers across the country.
Malaysia is set to introduce dedicated legislation for gig workers. According to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, this will make it the first country globally to do so.
The proposed Gig Workers Bill, expected to be tabled in Parliament between August and September 2025, aims to strengthen protections for more than 1.12mn gig workers across sectors such as p-hailing, e-hailing, and digital freelancing.
This development was announced following a roundtable involving over 100 stakeholders, including ministry representatives and gig platform providers.
To ensure national-level coordination, the government will also establish the Gig Malaysia Economic Commission (SEGiM) under the Prime Minister’s Office. The Commission will lead policy execution, monitoring, and sector development, with the aim to foster a fair, inclusive, and sustainable digital economy.
According to DPM Zahid, the initiative aims to balance industry growth with worker welfare, seeking to position Malaysia as a regional leader in gig economy governance.
