Mind Matters: This wellbeing advocate shares his top three ways to maintain mental wellbeing

Soo Hoo Yoon Hunn highlights why it's important to take proactive, compassionate approaches to address the most significant mental health challenge facing Malaysian corporates today.

In today's high-pressure corporate environment, mental health issues such as anxiety and depression are often overlooked, and Malaysia is no stranger to this.

Research has shown that many employees silently struggle with overwhelming stress, exacerbated by post-pandemic uncertainty. Without early intervention, these challenges can significantly impact wellbeing and productivity, as our interviewee Soo Hoo Yoon Hunn, Certified NLP Master Trainer, Abundant Impact, points out.

In our brand-new Mind Matters column, we speak to professionals and experts in the industry on their personal mental wellness & wellbeing practices, learnings, and tips. In this debut piece, Soo Hoo shares his top three strategies for maintaining his mental wellbeing.

Q What, according to you, is the biggest mental health challenge facing Malaysian corporates today?

The most significant mental health challenge in Malaysian corporates today is the hidden nature of anxiety and depression. In a fast-paced, post-pandemic world defined by volatility and uncertainty, many employees find themselves trapped in a cycle of stress and overwhelm, often going unnoticed. Without early detection or intervention, these issues escalate, silently eroding productivity and wellbeing.

Addressing this requires not just awareness but proactive, compassionate approaches that allow individuals to express, heal, and thrive amidst today’s demanding corporate landscape.

It’s about recognisng the silent struggles and equipping people with the tools to regain control over their mental health.

Q Can you share the top three strategies you practise to maintain your own mental wellbeing?

My top three strategies for maintaining mental wellbeing are:

Sabbath: I take one day each week to rest and recharge, allowing myself to focus on anything that nourishes my inner self—be it family time, hobbies, or simply relaxing—without work distractions.

Surrender: I practise gratitude and trust in God’s guidance. By viewing my business and challenges through this lens, I remain focused and at peace, knowing I’m a steward in a bigger purpose.

Daily Hi-5: Each morning, I drink water, exercise, breathe deeply, express gratitude, and set five key goals to stay grounded and positive.
