Thailand is now a BRICS Partner Country effective 1 January

Key areas of collaboration include trade, investment, and tourism. The partnership also seeks to foster people-to-people ties between Thailand and other BRICS members and partners.

Effective 1 January 2025, Thailand is officially a Partner Country of BRICS, as announced by Russia, the Chair of BRICS for 2024, on 28 December 2024.

This partnership strengthens Thailand’s long-standing cooperation with BRICS, which began in 2017 when the country joined the BRICS Plus mechanism. It opens up significant opportunities to deepen economic ties with BRICS member nations—emerging markets and developing countries with high growth potential. Key areas of collaboration include trade, investment, and tourism, while also enhancing people-to-people connections between Thailand and other BRICS members and partners.

Beyond economic cooperation, Thailand’s engagement with BRICS seeks to highlight its commitment to multilateralism, particularly among developing countries. The country is also keen to serve as a bridge between BRICS and other regional groupings, such as ASEAN, APEC, ACD, and BIMSTEC.

BRICS currently includes nine member countries:

  • Brazil
  • Russia
  • India
  • China
  • South Africa
  • Ethiopia
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Egypt
  • Iran

With Brazil assuming the BRICS chair in 2025, Thailand’s new Partner Country status will allow it to participate in key meetings, further supporting collaborative efforts within the BRICS framework.
