Despite challenges faced by businesses in 2020, Singapore observed a rise in overall employee engagement levels, up from 47% in 2019 to 56% in 2020. This was also seen in Thailand, where employee engagement levels saw a rise from 72% in 2019 to 76% in 2020.

According to Qualtrics' recent 2021 Singapore Employee Experience Trends Report , while Singapore's numbers were noted as in line with the global average (66%), Thailand's numbers rose "significantly above".

With these levels of engagement in mind, both Singapore and Thailand were on par when it came to employees' intent to stay with an organization for three or more years (56% in 2020, vs 43% in 2019).

The top five drivers of employee engagement in Singapore and Thailand

In terms  of the top drivers of employee engagement, both Singapore and Thailand differed in their factors. For instance, while a sense of belonging was the top driver in Singapore, "pride in the work my team delivers" took that spot in Thailand.

Singapore
#1 Creating a sense of belonging;
#2 Continually improving ways of working;
#3 Confidence in senior leadership;
#4 Managers role modelling effective collaboration with other teams; and
#5 Effective collaboration between teams.

Thailand
#1 Pride in the work my team delivers;
#2 Having in place processes allowing employees to be productive;
#3 Being part of a team effective at making decisions;
#4 Effective collaboration between teams; and
#5 Being confident to share opinions with management.

Wellbeing continues to be a priority, could be a key trend for 2021

The report further noted that across both countries, wellbeing, an important contributor to overall employee experience (EX), continues to be a priority for workers and is predicted to be a key trend for organisations in 2021. Further, a sense of belonging is "of particular importance" in the context of wellbeing.

In Singapore, employees who feel like they belong are more than four times more likely to rate their wellbeing favourably, than those who feel like they don't belong (75% vs. 18%).

At the same time, among employees in Thailand, more than seven in 10 (73%) rated their wellbeing as favourable - above the global average of 67%. Most notably, a sense of belonging at an organisation had the greatest impact on overall wellbeing, with wellbeing increasing to 80% for employees when this was the case.

93% of employees believe their company should listen to feedback

Apart from the above, the report noted that more than nine in 10 Singaporean and Thai employees (93%) believe it's important their company listens to feedback.

In line with this, in Singapore, the volume of respondents who said they have an opportunity to feedback rose to 74% in 2020 (2019: 65%); while in Thailand, this rose to 84% in 2020 (2019: 77%).

That said, just a little over one in five (21%) in Singapore said their company "acts on it very well" (4% less than in 2019), and slightly more than four in 10 in Thailand (42%) said so - a 21% decrease from the previous year.

Thai press release, dated 8 February 2021 (as provided by Qualtrics)

Experience Management (XM)
