Winning Secrets: The guiding principle that drives Advanced Micro Devices Global Services (Malaysia) to achieve excellence

The team at AMD is confident that by embracing directness, humility, collaboration, and inclusivity, it can drive innovation and overcome any challenges encountered.

Achieving organisational success is no easy feat, especially without the right people to drive it.

To excel, companies must prioritise the employee experience, making it a central focus for every HR leader.

A key component of this is a robust training programme. Effective training not only equips employees with the skills they need but also demonstrates a company's commitment to their growth and development. This investment will help retain top talent by fostering engagement, boosting job satisfaction, and building a sense of loyalty.

This commitment is exemplified by the team at Advanced Micro Devices Global Services (Malaysia) (AMD), whose focus on exceptional employee experience and robust training programmes has earned the organisation the bronze award for 'Best Graduate Training Programme' at the Employee Experience Awards 2024 in Malaysia.

Fresh from its victory, the HR team from AMD speaks with HRO, sharing insights on how a focus on innovative initiatives has paved the way for success.

Q. How would you describe the pillars of your employee experience strategy, and what are the principles you have taken into account to develop this?

We strongly advocate our employee life cycle. Recruitment -> onboarding -> development -> retainment -> separation are the pillars in ensuring we are maintaining and advancing the employee experience in AMD. Development & retainment are the key pillars that we prioritise wherein the employee value proposition (EVP) is the guiding principle.

  • Organisation - Company mission, vision, and culture that align with their values, having the opportunity and support to give back to the community, feeling accepted for who they are, being able to bring their whole self to work.
  • People - A leadership team that inspires them and builds strong relationships at work
  • Work - Making a difference through taking on and creatively solving new challenges.
  • Rewards - Ensuring pay and benefits are fair and equitable in comparison to competitors
  • Opportunity – Drive opportunities to build their skills and stay up to date through networking opportunities.

Q. In a world propelled by rapid change, what measures do you have in place to maintain a people-centric, human approach to your EX as it evolves?

The people-centric, human approach is embedded into the EX from day one upon joining the company.

Personalised onboarding experience: We tailor the onboarding process to each individual, including assigning mentors who provide guidance and support tailored to their career goals and personal interests.

Continuous learning and development: We invest heavily in ongoing training and development programmes that go beyond technical skills. We offer leadership and soft skills training, fostering a well-rounded growth environment.

Open communication channels: We have multiple channels for feedback and communication, ensuring that new hires feel heard and can voice their concerns and ideas. Regular check-ins (one-on-ones), all hands meetings, employee surveys foster a culture of transparency and inclusiveness.

Work-life balance initiatives: We provide flexible work arrangements, wellness programmes, and support resources to create an environment where employees can thrive both professionally and personally.

Real-world projects and collaboration: We integrate new hires into cross-functional teams, working on real-world projects that provide meaningful learning experiences, which ensures they feel like integral parts of the team and contribute to impactful work from the start.

Q. What initiatives do you undertake such that the delivery of employee experience is a collective responsibility of all stakeholders in the organisation?

The results are evident when both employees and management collaborate to achieve our objectives

  • Employee goals: Culture and personal development are part of every employees yearly goals.
  • Standardised onboarding process: A standard onboarding process is observed throughout the organization.
  • Skip-level meetings: We create an environment where feedback are safe to be brought up and heard. Higher level management takes the feedback and drive organizational process and changes.

Q. Do you have words of wisdom to share with others in the industry on the best ways to keep your employee experience consistent and beautiful?

AMDers are culture evangelists by embracing the above behaviours and leading by example!
