A day in the life of: Lainey Yang, HR Director APAC, Gategroup

A different day and a different country bring different challenges and tasks for Lainey Yang, HR Director APAC, Gategroup. She tells us about her role model, what makes a meaningful meeting for her, and more, in this interview with Priya Sunil.

Q What is the one thing that gets you out of bed every morning?

Morning is my favourite time of a day. Every morning, I will receive a wake up message from my close friend and then get up and do some stretches before making breakfast. I really enjoy the feeling of ‘fresh’ energy in the morning and always look forward to a good day ahead!

Q What’s on today’s task list at the office?

Depending on which country I will be in on that day, then the type of challenges and tasks I face can be quite varied. Apart from travelling, my day probably is similar to many people working in the office nowadays. There are regular meetings scheduled for updates and to discuss different topics, as well as impromptu meetings to deal with more urgent topics, and in between these meeting I will reply emails or return phone calls.

Q What can people expect when they receive a meeting invite from you?

I will expect a ‘meaningful’ meeting. I always try to have an insightful discussion which is direct to the points and generates practical suggestions/solutions as the outcome.

Q Coffee or tea - which is your go-to drink to power you through the 4pm slump?

Coffee! I love a good cup of coffee – the comforting warmth, the rich aroma, and the variety of different flavours from all around the world.

Q Who is your role model in or outside of work, and why?

My mum! She’s a strong, independent woman, who is very sincere and trustworthy – never once in my life have I heard my mother tell a lie. She has provided me with constant support in everything I’ve ever done and growing up, she always pushed me to be the best that I could be at whatever I did.

Q It’s the end of the long work day - what’s your favourite way to end it?

I always go out for a walk around the lake if the weather is good. In modern life, I feel that we often sit down and get stuck to our mobile phones for too long, so it’s important to make a point of being active and get off the sofa even just for a gentle walk after dinner.
