Amazon Web Services launches new APAC infrastructure region in Malaysia

AWS is planning to invest approximately RM29.2bn in Malaysia through 2038.

A new Amazon Web Services (AWS) Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region has been established last week (21 August 2024). 

According to an economic impact study conducted by the organisation (and cited in the image above), the new AWS Region is estimated to add approximately RM 57.3bn to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) as well as support an average of more than 3,500 full-time equivalent jobs at external businesses annually through 2038. 

These jobs, including construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and others within the country’s broader economy, will be part of the AWS supply chain in Malaysia. 

Minister of Investment Trade & Industry (MITI), Tengku Zafrul, said: "The launch of an AWS infrastructure region in Malaysia provides access to new and emerging technology for Malaysian entities and businesses of all sizes, boosting our country’s capabilities for digital innovation,

“This milestone is a significant step towards fulfilling the vision of Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030 to build a highly skilled, innovative, prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable economy.

"We recognise the transformative power of digitalisation, cloud computing and AI as key drivers in Malaysia’s effort to become a manufacturing and services hub within Asia."

Digging in further to understand the anticipated creation of jobs in Malaysia, it is expected to take place to AWS Malaysia's training capabilities in cloud skills through the AWS Academy, which is active in 49 universities. In addition, it has initiatives in place like Programme AKAR and AWS Skills Guild to support digital transformation in organisations. 

These efforts, AWS states, are expected to contribute to the creation of over 3,500 jobs annually in Malaysia.

Other highlights from the announcement include: 

  • AWS plans to invest approx. RM 29.2bn in Malaysia by 2038, to boost economic growth and help local businesses and the public sector innovate.
  • AWS is aiming for a net-zero carbon by 2040 and water positivity by 2030.

Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS, commented: 

“Malaysia’s rapidly growing digital economy requires access to secure, resilient, and sustainable cloud infrastructure. 

"AWS is proud to support Malaysia’s digital transformation and help accelerate its role as a regional hub for AI,” he added.
