Minister of Manpower Yassierli called on universities to integrate digital competencies into their curricula and urged students to build a broad skill set, including technical expertise and interpersonal abilities, to succeed in building the future workforce.
In an increasingly digital world, three critical skills have emerged as rare yet highly demanded in Indonesia's job market, according to the Minister of Manpower, Yassierli.
Speaking at a public lecture at the Sumatra Institute of Technology (ITERA) on 21 January 2025 (Thursday), Minister Yassierli highlighted the urgent need for big data specialists, fintech engineers, and AI machine learning specialists to address the country's workforce challenges.
The Minister expressed concern that the lack of skilled professionals in these areas could lead to Indonesia importing workers with these competencies while exporting domestic assistants and construction workers abroad. "Indonesia will import workers with these three skills, while we export domestic assistants and construction workers abroad. That's what happens if it is not anticipated from now on," he explained.
To address this, the Minister appealed to universities to update their curricula, ensuring that students gain exposure to the digital world. He also stressed the importance of a multi-competency approach for students to succeed in the future workforce.
"These three competencies must be present, if you want to succeed both in your career, as well as in the industry," he said, emphasising that students pursuing degrees in fields such as engineering, natural sciences, or architecture often graduate with only one core competency. He advocated the addition of skills in information technology and interpersonal relations to create a more well-rounded and competitive workforce.
In addition to preparing for future roles, Minister Yassierli noted that some jobs are at risk of becoming obsolete, including portal service clerks, bank teller-related clerks, data entry clerks, and cashiers and ticket clerks.
