One key objective of the AKPS is to create more efficient enforcement and control, uniformed SOPs, coordinated management and administration, and human resources optimisation.
The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) was officially launched in Tinjau Anjung, Kuala Lumpur Airport (KLIA) on 2 February 2025 (Sunday), in the attendance of Deputy Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Hj. Fadillah bin Haji Yusof.
The role of the AKPS, first talked about in October 2024, will be to help with Malaysia’s integrated border management, aimed at ensuring the security, peace, and sovereignty of the country.
In his announcement in October 2024, Minister of Home Affairs Saifuddin Nasution Ismail explained that various locations have been selected based on different demographic and risk characteristics of these sea and land gateways. Each location will implement the border control at different times.
Rantau Panjang was the first station of operation for the AKPS, effective 1 January this year, with four more stations added this month: KLIA 1, KLIA 2 (including Cargo Complex), The Sultan Iskandar Building ICQS (including JB Sentral), and Tanjung Pelepas Port and Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS.
The new border control system may be an advantage for collaborations and innovations to further guarantee the security, sovereignty and prosperity of the country. One key objective of the AKPS is to create a more efficient enforcement and control, uniformed standard operating procedures, coordinated management and administration, and human resources optimisation, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated.
As cited in The Star, DPM Fadillah said that the implementation of the AKPS will align with Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, as this initiative will strengthen Malaysia’s commitment to regional integration, cooperation, and cross-border travel within the region.
