His term of office will come to an end this December. The SAR will hold the Chief Executive Election on 13 October 2024.

Macao’s Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng has issued a statement that he will not participate in the election for the next term as Chief Executive.

Ho cited the reason as “due to the fact that my health has not been fully restored”. He has therefore made this decision "for the sake of Macao’s long-term development and from the perspective of the overall situation".

In the statement, he sincerely thanked the Central Government, all the sectors of the Macao society, and Macao’s residents "for their full trust and steadfast support over the past five years". He further thanked all the civil servants for their close collaboration and coordination.

At the end of the statement, Ho said he “will fully support the sixth Chief Executive and the Macao SAR Government in governing according to law and in their continued contribution to the cause of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ and the development of Macao".

Ho’s term of office as the fifth Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region will come to an end this December. The date for Macao’s Chief Executive Election has been set for 13 October 2024. The nomination period for Chief Executive Election candidates runs from 29 August to 12 September.
