Malaysia issues travel advisory for citizens travelling to and residing in the UK

Australia and Indonesia were also among the countries that have issued travel warnings in light of recent unrest in the city of Sunderland.

In response to unrest following a recent stabbing incident in England, Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an advisory for citizens travelling to the United Kingdom (UK).

In an update on 4 August 2024 (Sunday), the Ministry said that the High Commission of Malaysia in London is currently closely monitoring a series of protests taking place in several areas of the country. In that vein, it stated, Malaysians residing in or travelling to the UK are further urged to avoid protest areas, remain vigilant, and remain informed about the latest updates and guidance from local authorities.

Malaysians abroad were also encouraged to register with MFA.

Apart from Malaysia, Australia and Indonesia were also among the countries to issue travel warnings to the UK in light of the unrest.

Australia's Smartraveller has raised its advice level to "exercise a high degree of caution". Similarly, travellers and citizens are urged to avoid areas where protests are occurring, and stay tuned to the media for information and updates.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's Embassy in London shared the following advisory for Indonesian citizens in a Facebook post:

"In connection with the riots on Friday 02/08 in Sunderland and the possibility of similar action plans in other cities, the Indonesian Embassy in London appeals to all Indonesian citizens in the United Kingdom and Ireland, to:

  1. Consider urgency and increase vigilance, especially if you have to travel or do activities outside the home;
  2. Follow the instructions and directions of the local authorities, and continue to monitor communication on the social media of the Indonesian Embassy in London and the local Indonesian community, and
  3. Avoid crowds and places that have the potential to be gathering places for masses or groups of demonstrators."
