Malaysia's population reaches 10% non-citizens in Q1 2024

This makes up 3.4mn people, of the total population of 34mn in Malaysia.

Malaysia's population reached an estimated 34mn in the first quarter 2024, following a growth of 2.3% from the first quarter of 2023 (33.2mn).

Of the total, 90% were citizens (30.6mn) while 10% were non-citizens (3.4mn), according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia's latest Demographics Statistics Q1 2024 released on Tuesday (14 May 2024).

By gender, the male population increased to 17.8mn, up from 17.4mn in Q1 2023, while the female population rose to 16.1mn, up from 15.8mn in Q1 2023. With this, the overall sex ratio of population was 111 males per 100 females. Breaking it down further, the sex ratio for citizens was 103 males per 100 females.

Looking at racial groups, the Malay community accounted for 57.9% (17.7mn) of the population in the first quarter of 2024 (Q1 2023: 17.6mn). The Chinese, Indian, and Other Bumiputera communities remained at 22.6%, 6.6%, and 12.2%, respectively.

The Demographic Statistics also recorded a total of 47,964 deaths in Q1 2024, a decrease of 1.5% as compared to the first quarter of 2023 (48,693 deaths). The number of deaths recorded for males were 27,434 while female deaths stood at 20,530.

Overall, the demographics recorded by state and federal territory are as follows:

Light blue = Q1 2023; Dark blue = Q1 2024.

According to the statistics,

  • Selangor (21.6%), Johor (12.3%), and Sabah (11.0%) recorded high populations in the first quarter 2024.
  • Selangor recorded the highest number of live births with 19,951 births (18.8%) while Labuan recorded the lowest births with 323 births (0.3%).
  • In terms of death, Selangor recorded the highest number with 7,730 deaths (16.1%) while Putrajaya recorded the lowest deaths with 68 deaths (0.1%).
