Sarawak adopts Workforce Recalibration Programme 2.0 from 26 July to 31 December 2023

Employers in the 3D sector (Dangerous, difficult and dirty) are allowed to recruit illegal immigrants by registering them as employees during this period.

The Sarawak Government has agreed to adopt Malaysia's Workforce Recalibration Programme 2.0 (RTK 2.0) for the period of 26 July (Wednesday) to 31 December 2023 (Sunday).

In a statement on Wednesday (26 July), Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala said the main objective of the RTK 2.0 Programme is to regulate the existing illegal immigrants (PATI) in the state as legal foreign workers.

He added that employers in the 3D sector (Dangerous, difficult and dirty) are allowed to recruit PATI by registering them as employees during this period.

Employers and PATI who intend to participate in the programme will be directed to work with the Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) and the Department of Labour in Sarawak.

The deputy minister also shared that PATI who will not be allowed to be registered in the programme would be foreign nationals who have committed an offence on or before 31 December 2022 under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, i.e., enter and stay in the country without having a valid pass; Section 15(1)(c) Aka Immigration 1959/63, i.e., overtime stay; and Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, i.e., breach of pass conditions and validity period of travel documents for at least six months.

Employers may head to JIM's RTK 2.0 portal for more information.

According to a report by Harian Metro, shared by JIM on Facebook, about 720,099 PATI in Malaysia have registered in the RTK 2.0, involving 51,753 employers.
