Singapore and Indonesia extend maritime training partnership

The two nations will continue working together to train government officials in the maritime field, strengthen safety at sea, and protect the marine environment.

Singapore and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to maritime excellence by extending a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on the training and development of government maritime officials for another two years.

This renewal of another two years, signed on 7 February 2025 (Friday), marks two decades of successful collaboration between the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Indonesia's Directorate General of Sea Transportation (DGST).

Since the partnership's inception in 2005, more than 120 programmes and workshops have been conducted, benefitting more than 1,800 officials. These initiatives have been effective in implementing International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions, thereby enhancing navigational safety and marine environmental protection in the region. They have also equipped senior officers with the knowledge to address emerging industry challenges.

In his comments on the milestone, Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, emphasised the importance of this renewed partnership. He added that MPA reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the longstanding bilateral maritime cooperation with Indonesia and expressed anticipation for further collaborations moving forward.

Capt Antoni Priadi, Director General of Sea Transportation, DGST
shared the same sentiment: "The extension of this MOU shows not only good cooperation but also strong collaboration between DGST and MPA, which will continue to run in accordance with developments in the maritime world to ensure the safety of navigation and marine environment protection."
