With Polling Day declared a public holiday, if an employee is required to work on that day, they are entitled to an extra day’s salary for the day’s work, or should be given a day off.
With Polling Day for Singapore's Presidential Election 2023 confirmed to take place on 1 September (Friday), thus being declared a public holiday, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has issued a reminder to employers on the relevant Employment Act (EA) entitlements.
As reaffirmed by the Ministry, Polling Day should be treated in the same manner as any other public holiday. Employees covered by the EA are entitled to paid public holidays, and if an employee is required to work on a public holiday, the employee is entitled to an extra day’s salary for the day’s work or should be given a day off.
Employers also have the additional option of granting time-off-in-lieu, based on a mutually agreed number of hours, for working on a public holiday. This applies to the following groups of employees:
- Workmen earning more than S$4,500 a month;
- Non-workmen earning more than S$2,600 a month, and
- All Managers and Executives.
To recap, Elections Department Singapore announced on Tuesday (22 August 2023) that all three qualified Presidential candidates have been nominated to stand for election on 1 September, under section 16(5) of the Presidential Elections Act 1991.
These candidates are:
- Ng Kok Song
- Tharman Shanmugaratnam
- Tan Kin Lian
In line with this, the Department has also released details on all ordinary polling stations, which can be found in the Notice of Presidential Election. No direct recording electronic voting system will be used at the poll.
