Winning Secrets: How Pall Malaysia is helping employees to realise life’s potential

Pall Malaysia took home the silver award for 'Best Rewards and Recognition Programme' and the bronze for 'Best Career Development Programme' at the Employee Experience Awards 2021, Malaysia, in addition to being nominated as a finalist for the categories 'Best Employee Wellness Strategy' and 'Best Work-life Balance Strategy'.

In this interview, Chen Theng Aik and Norashikin Abdul Ariff, Director and Senior HR Manager respectively, Pall Malaysia, talk about the 10-point employee engagement plan the team has developed in its pursuit of becoming an employer of choice.

Q Congratulations on winning at this inaugural edition of the award! What is your employee experience strategy that led to this achievement?

Pall is part of Danaher and at Danaher, we have a global shared purpose, i.e., 'helping realise life’s potential'. In Malaysia, we have developed a 10- point engagement plan in our pursuit to become an employer of choice. We hope to have associates who are highly engaged, motivated, and part of a high-performing team.

How did you and your team conceptualise and adapt this strategy to suit evolving workforce needs in the past year?

We listen to our associates via a 'stop, start, continue' suggestions & idea generation programme, hold regular team meetings, one-on-one discussions and skip-level discussions to gather feedback, in addition to doing an annual survey to gauge our progress.

We regularly provide updates and communicate to all associates via town hall meetings.

What challenges did you face along the way, and how did you overcome them?

We operate in a market that is highly competitive among talent and trends are very dynamic. We need to continuously not only keep up but stay ahead with our employee engagement programmes.

How did the strategy add to the overall employee experience in your organisation, in terms of ROI?

Our annual engagement index has been steadily increasing over the years and for 2020 it was at 88%, while the attrition rate was below 5%. We hope to be able to sustain this or further improve on it.

What is the most exciting and valuable thing about being part of the debut Employee Experience Awards?

We hope to instill pride and motivation in our associates and look to continuously improve and work towards our goal of becoming an employer of choice. An added bonus will be the ability to recruit, develop, and retain the best talents.

Looking ahead, what else do you have planned as you continue to enhance the overall employee experience?

To always listen to the needs of our associates, to continuously adopt the best people-related practices, and to adapt/improve.

Do share tips to inspire your peers who are working on their EX-strategies and would love to participate in the awards next year.

There is no one cookie-cutter solution. It is all about listening to our associates, having a genuine interest and passion in the wellbeing, motivation, engagement, and development of our people, and relentlessly working to improve.

Lastly, to end on a fun note – if you could describe the employee experience at your organisation in one sentence, what would that be?

We work hard, we care, we have fun, and we are happy.
