As a testament, the HR team at Eu Yan Sang International took home the gold award for 'Excellence in HR Change Management' as the HR Excellence Awards 2024, Singapore.

In this interview, Ng Lip Gee, General Manager, Group Human Resources, Eu Yan Sang International shares how authenticity drives the organisation's approach to HR excellence, creating initiatives that balance employee wellbeing with organisational success.

Q What was the motivation that sparked your passion & business case for pursuing your outstanding people strategy?

My passion for people strategy stems from a firm belief that people are a company’s greatest asset. When employees are engaged and their potential is unleashed, we can achieve remarkable things and reach new heights in our business goals. This creates a win-win situation for both the staff and the company. By fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and supported, we not only drive business success but also enhance the overall wellbeing and satisfaction of our team.

Q
Looking back, can you share a challenge that you overcame in your journey of HR excellence? How did you triumph?

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and similarly, achieving HR excellence is an ongoing journey filled with challenges that require our constant attention.

Prioritising and making compromises are essential as we strive for excellence in HR. Adapting to the ever-changing business environment and demands, along with incorporating feedback, is crucial for the success of any HR plan or initiative, whether it’s related to remote working arrangements, learning and development programmes, system implementation or policies.

The key to HR excellence lies in authenticity, ensuring that our initiatives are genuinely intended to benefit both staff and the business. Humility is vital to accept feedback and make necessary adjustments. Resilience and persistence are also crucial, as there will always be resistance to change. By embracing these principles, we can navigate the complexities of HR and drive meaningful progress.

Q
Beyond the recognition, what impact do you hope your feature in the HR Excellence Awards would have on the HR community and manpower landscape?

Beyond the recognition, I hope my feature in the HR Excellence Awards will inspire my fellow HR practitioners to persevere in their pursuit of HR excellence. It’s crucial to continuously strive to add value to the business and establish ourselves as credible business partners. By doing so, we can significantly impact our organisations and the broader business landscape.

Moreover, I aim to encourage ongoing innovation within the HR community. Sharing best practices and new ideas is essential to uplift the overall contribution of HR. Together, we can create a more dynamic and supportive environment that benefits both our employees and our organisations.

Q
Could you share some advice you would give to others aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

My advice to those aspiring to follow in my footsteps is to remain curious and stay attuned to industry trends and environmental changes. The landscape of HR and business is constantly evolving, and keeping up with these changes is crucial for success. Never become complacent; there is always more to learn. Embrace continuous learning and development as a lifelong journey.

Stay humble
and remember that no matter how much you know, there is always room for growth. Continue to sharpen your skills and refine your strategies. Lastly, persevere in the face of resistance and rejection. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but they are also opportunities to learn and grow stronger. By maintaining resilience and a positive attitude, you can overcome obstacles and achieve your goals

Q
Let's talk inspiration! Who has been a driving force behind your success?

I have worked with many bosses and leaders, gaining invaluable insights from each of them. They have shaped my approach to work and leadership, contributing to my growth in different ways. While no single person stands out as the sole driving force, the collective wisdom and guidance I’ve received have been instrumental in my success.

I take pride in delivering high-quality work and adding value to my team members. It’s important to me to role model this commitment and set high standards, so that as a team, we can deliver excellent work to the organisation. This dedication to excellence and continuous improvement is what truly inspires and drives me.
