Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook stated that these initiatives not only enhance convenience for Thaipusam celebrants but also help reduce traffic congestion and promote sustainable public transport use.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport announced on 4 February 2025 that additional public transport services will be provided in selected areas in conjunction with the Thaipusam festivities happening next week.
According to Minister of Transport Loke Siew Fook, in a media conference organised by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malaysian Railway, or KTMB) the initiative will involve the addition of trains in operation, free fares on 10 and 11 February 2025, and an emphasis on the use of cashless ticket transactions.
Here is a breakdown of the various initiatives that will be taking place next week:
Train services
- KTMB will operate for 24 hours, for four days and three nights starting from 9 to 12 February 2025 to meet the needs of passengers – in particular, Hindu celebrants, tourists, and members of the public who want to witness or partake in the Thaipusam celebration in Batu Caves.
- KTM passengers will be able to commute for free for two days, on 10 and 11 February 2025 (Monday and Tuesday), between 12:00am to 11:59pm via the automatic doors.
- All payments are now cashless via the KTMB mobile app, Link Commuter Card, Touch 'N Go Card, local bank debit/credit cards, and physical QR tickets will be available for free at ticket counters on 10 & 11 February 2025.
- Senior citizens, the disabled, and children aged two to six will be given a special 50% discount, while children under two years will be able to commute free-of-charge.
Bus services
- Prasarana Malaysia, through RapidKL and RapidPenang, will provide 30 free shuttle buses from Hab Bandar Pasar Seni, Gombak LRT, and Kg. Batu to Batu Caves stations with 10-minute intervals on 10 & 11 February.
- For users in Penang, RapidPenang will provide a free 24-hour ferry service on 10 and 11 February 2025 by Penang Port Commission (SPPP) and Penang Port, with service extending till 2:30am on 12 February 2025.
BAS.MY
- BAS.MY will offer free additional services in Johor Bahru, Seremban, and Ipoh on 11 February 2025 to help Hindu commuters reach festival locations near temples.
On top of the free public transport services, the transport minister added that 250 staff will be on duty throughout the duration of the additional train operations to ensure the condition of the train stays optimal and is safe for travel.
In his closing remarks, Minister Loke stated: "I hope that all the people who want to use public transport in conjunction with Thaipusam 2025 can plan their trip neatly and cooperate with staff on duty.
"Let’s work together to ensure a safe journey throughout this festive celebration, be safe, smooth, and full of meaning in celebrating a very special festival."
