Malaysia expands efforts to boost talent pipeline in STEM amongst students

The initiative is geared towards primary and secondary school students, with the aim to provide industry exposure and ignite interest in STEM careers.

Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp) is boosting its 'YES! Rock the School' initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Building on efforts in Kedah, Pahang, and Johor, the programme is now active in Penang through partnerships with the Penang State Government and Universiti Sains Malaysia.

The initiative is geared towards primary and secondary school students, with the aim to provide industry exposure and ignite interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. To this end, the programme equips students with valuable industry insights and knowledge, aligning with Penang’s vision to cultivate future-ready talent for high-tech industries.

These efforts are part of KESUMA’s commitment to preparing the future workforce by engaging schools to shape the talent pipeline, it was stated.

The opening ceremony of YES! Rock the School Mega Penang 2024 was officiated by Tun Dato' Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi bin Haji Abdul Razak, Governor of Penang. Minister of Human Resources YB. Steven Sim Chee Keong also spoke at the opening, where he reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to tackling underemployment early through collaborative initiatives.

"It’s crucial to align skills with industry needs so that Malaysians can fully benefit from skills development and higher education, leading to fulfilling careers that meet their expectations and aspirations."

In his speech, he also announced that TalentCorp will be introducing career guidance via its 'YES! Counsellors' initiative by January 2025. Through partnerships with institutions of higher learning and the private sector, this initiative will equip school counsellors with insights into industry trends and emerging technologies, enabling them to guide students more effectively.

The first phase of the pilot will see 168 school counsellors from 127 secondary schools in Penang being trained to provide enhanced career coaching. This is expected to benefit 100,000 secondary school students, while also certifying counsellors as master trainers, ensuring the programme's sustainability.

Following the pilot in Penang, the YES! Counsellors initiative will be expanded nationwide with the support of the Ministry of Education.
