PERKESO and foodpanda Malaysia sign MoU to strengthen social protection for gig workers

Through the collaboration, foodpanda Malaysia has sponsored RM200,000 to cover the remaining 10% contribution under the SPS Padanan Caruman 2.0 initiative.

On 13 March 2025, Malaysia's Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) shared on its official Facebook page details about the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) and Delivery Hero Malaysia (foodpanda).

The event highlighted a concerning statistic of only 26% of Malaysia's 1.16mn gig workers are currently contributing to the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS).

To bridge this gap, foodpanda Malaysia has sponsored RM200,000 to cover the remaining 10% contribution under the SPS Padanan Caruman 2.0 initiative. This funding will support more than 8,000 food delivery riders, ensuring they receive essential social protection. Said to align with the core MADANI principles of compassion and kindness, this initiative reinforces the commitment to safeguarding the welfare of gig workers.

The MoU was signed by Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, Group Chief Executive Officer of PERKESO, and Tan Ming Luk, Managing Director,  of foodpanda Malaysia. The ceremony was also attended by YB Steven SimMinister of Human Resources, along with Shubham Saran, Director of Operations, foodpanda Malaysia

Minister Sim emphasised that foodpanda’s initiative should serve as an example for other companies, helping to create a more sustainable work ecosystem. He also mentioned that the government has increased the SKSPS allocation by RM86.2mn, bringing the total to RM186.2mn, to ensure more gig workers are covered by social protection.

On the same note, Tan reaffirmed foodpanda's ongoing commitment to the welfare of its delivery partners through the panda hearts program, which focuses on safety, wellbeing, personal development, community, and welfare benefits.
