Pizza Hut reluctant to discuss compensation for employee killed on job

More bad news for the family of the Pizza Hut delivery man who was killed on Monday as Pizza Hut refused to grant them a meeting to discuss compensation issues.

The Pizza Hut delivery man surnamed Kwok was killed after his motorcycle collided with a tow truck. He was rushed to Yan Chai Hospital with arm and head injuries and was later declared dead. The 25-year-old was the sole breadwinner of the family, supporting his parents and little brother who is at school.

Kwok's father told the Oriental Daily News  that a Pizza Hut manager reached out to him on Monday night to set up a meeting to discuss compensation issues on Wednesday. But on Wednesday Kwok's mother received a call and was told that the manager was not free to attend the meeting.

Pizza Hut later agreed to set up a new meeting today, after the Kwok family sought assistance from the Labour Department. Pizza Hut shunning the Kwok family was also widely reported in the local media.

The Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims, which is assisting the Kwok family, posted a message on its Facebook page saying that team effort made Pizza Hut "suddenly become available for the meeting".

A spokesperson from Pizza Hut explained that there was a miscommunication between the two parties and the details of the meeting on Wednesday had not been confirmed.
