PR firm Grayling Singapore to pilot 4.5-day workweek till end-2023

From 1 August, employees who have served with the company for more than a year will have Friday afternoons off, giving them a longer weekend while aiming to maintain the same level of productivity and efficiency.

Grayling, a global PR firm, will be piloting a reduced workweek in its Singapore starting this month (August 2023) till the end of the year, in an attempt to raise productivity by improving employee wellbeing and satisfaction.

Announced today (1 August), the trial will see employees who have served with the company for more than a year be able to take Friday afternoons off, giving them a longer weekend while aiming to maintain the same level of productivity and efficiency. In this period, a core team will be on standby to manage urgent client requests.

This decision to trial a reduced workweek comes following consultations with employees and clients, who were supportive of the move, the firm said. Danny Tan, Managing Director, Grayling Singapore (pictured below, far-left), commented: "Work is an important part of our lives, but it shouldn’t completely define who we are and how we value our time. Anything that helps our team feel that they can live more fulfilling and empowered lives is worth trying.

"How can it be a bad thing to have consultants who show up more refreshed, more fulfilled, and ready for the demanding challenge of consultancy work?"

As cited in the announcement, employees also shared their views on the pilot:

Shirley Kettler, Senior Account Manager (pictured below, second from left): "One thing that helps me unwind is spending quality time with my dog. With the extra time on Fridays, I’m thrilled that I will be able to now take my dog for swimming lessons!”

Annabel Lim, Account Director (pictured below, bottom-right)"With a 4.5-day work week, I am able to be fully present as I engage in meaningful activities with my growing toddler beyond the limited weekday evenings, and prioritise self-care for personal growth. I can cherish the joys of parenthood that are often compromised due to demanding work schedules."

Samantha Jong, Senior Account Executive (pictured below, top-right): "Being a mental health advocate, I deeply appreciate this initiative, which demonstrates the company’s understanding and genuine concern for our wellbeing. Having experienced mental health struggles first-hand, I can’t stress how vital having a healthy work-life balance is, and the pilot is a tangible step towards achieving that balance. The additional half day will allow me more time to recharge, and of course, bonding time with my new puppy!"
