The changes come as part of a global newsroom strategy to strengthen BBC’s live and breaking news coverage.
About 12 staff members in the BBC News Singapore Bureau have reportedly been told to reapply for new roles after their positions were closed as part of a restructuring exercise.
As reported by The Straits Times, affected staff have been given the opportunity to compete with external candidates for 11 newly created roles. However, they have also been informed that retrenchment is a possibility, with at least one employee expected to be laid off by the end of the recruitment exercise.
In response to queries by HRO, a BBC spokesperson said the changes aim to strengthen its round-the-clock service for audiences from London, Washington D.C., Sydney, and Singapore.
"The operational changes in the BBC News Singapore Bureau are part of this plan and will ensure there is a greater focus on live and breaking news both for and from the region," they stated.
No information was shared on the number of roles impacted, the specific job positions impacted, and the outplacement support BBC is offering to the affected employees.
