Singapore's MOM rules out intent to harmonise workforce regulations under Johor-Singapore SEZ project

"Singaporeans who wish to work in Malaysia, and vice versa, must meet the requirements of the respective work pass frameworks," the Ministry reinforced.

On 7 January 2025 (Tuesday), Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim shared updates regarding the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project. Among the highlights, both leaders announced initiatives to streamline cross-border travel, including the introduction of QR code clearance and automated lanes for a more seamless experience.

In lieu of the above, responding to a parliamentary query about the possible harmonisation of workforce regulations under the JS-SEZ project, Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower said on 8 January that "there is no intent to harmonise workforce regulations" between the countries.

"The SEZ aims to enhance economic cooperation and connectivity, facilitating the movement of people and goods to benefit businesses and citizens of both nations," the Ministry stated.

"Singaporeans who wish to work in Malaysia, and vice versa, must meet the requirements of the respective work pass frameworks," it reinforced.
