Singaporean food service company fined S$90k over death of employee

Singaporean food service provider Commonwealth Culinary Creations was fined S$90,000 on Tuesday (May 16), after one of its employees slipped on the production floor on his way to check on pastries and fell to his death.

In a press release, the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) stated that the company was fined for its failure to ensure that its workplace is safe and does not impose any health risks to its employees.

MOM shared that upon investigating, it was revealed that the company had neglected its responsibility to keep floor conditions safe, provide anti-slip floor mats and to install warning signs.

Speaking further, MOM's director of occupational safety and health inspectorate Chan Yew Kwong said: “This is an unfortunate accident which could have been prevented if the company had taken simple precautionary safety measures.” He added that while control measures had been proposed by the company itself in its risk assessment, they failed to implement them.

He reminded employers that alerting workers to safety hazards can greatly reduce accidents and cultivate a safety first mindset among workers. "Workers should also be required to wear anti-slip shoes within the area. Safety should never be taken for granted," Chan affirmed.
