Thailand to expand virtual healthcare services to reduce in-person follow-ups at hospitals

Healthcare professionals will also be given access to electronic health records through regulated access protocols, ensuring that treatment decisions are based on accurate medical histories.

Thailand's Public Relations Department (PRD) announced on 25 March 2025 (Tuesday) that the country's Ministry of Public Health will be expanding tele-healthcare services to cut hospital crowds.

According to the PRD's press statement, the Ministry is advancing efforts to modernise healthcare delivery, with the goal to reduce outpatient congestion in public hospitals by at least 5% by September this year.

This will be done through the following avenues:

  • Telemedicine services
  • Home delivery of medication, and
  • Use of digital medical certificates.

This is so that medical care will be faster and more accessible whilst easing the strain on staff and facilities in Thailand.

In addition, and as part of the telehealth process, medication and medical supplies will be delivered to patients' homes to reduce the need for in-person follow-ups and support continuity of care.

Moreover, healthcare professionals will also have access to electronic health records through regulated access protocols, ensuring treatment decisions are based on accurate medical histories.

"To support this digital transition, the ministry issued the 2024 Telemedicine Service Standards, which require providers to meet strict conditions for professional qualifications, secure identity verification, system integration, and patient consent.

"All services must be recorded with traceable documentation, and data must be stored in compliance with national cybersecurity laws," the PRD shared.

Backed by cybersecurity certifications and compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act, the Ministry's digital health platform, made accessible through the "Mor Prom" application and Line Official Account, aims to offer a secure environment for patients as well as providers as Thailand progresses its' digital healthcare.
