The gift of self-reflection: Questions leaders can ask themselves to start the new year

We have jotted down a self-reflection checklist that can potentially lead you to meaningful change towards the things you want most in life.

Lasting growth usually starts with thoughtful self-reflection.

Taking time out during the end or start of the year can help many leaders & managers set themselves up to successfully achieve their life and business goals for the new year.

Simple measures like listing out our goals in simple bullet points, and sticking them up where we can see them daily, can be gentle reminders of things we promised ourselves to try and do, especially when life gets busy or circumstances look particularly difficult.

For anyone who might appreciate the support, we have jotted down the following self-reflection checklist that can potentially lead you to meaningful change towards the things you want most in life.

Work & career
- Am I finding purpose and meaning in my work?
- How do I feel about my current work-life balance?
- What recent achievements am I proud of?
- What skills do I want to develop further?
- How aligned is my career path with my long-term aspirations?

Family & relationships
- How present am I with my loved ones?
- Do I communicate openly and honestly with my family?
- Are there any relationships I need to repair or invest more energy in?
- How do I express gratitude and support to my family members?

Friendships & social connections
- Who are the people that uplift and inspire me?
- Do I feel connected and supported by my friends?
- How often do I reach out and stay connected?
- Am I nurturing meaningful, two-way relationships?

Health & wellbeing
- How do I feel physically, mentally, and emotionally?
- Am I prioritising rest, nutrition, and movement?
- What habits support my wellbeing?
- What stressors do I need to address?

Personal growth & learning
- What have I learned about myself recently?
- How open am I to new experiences and perspectives?
- Am I challenging myself enough to grow?
- What limiting beliefs might be holding me back?

Purpose & fulfillment
- What values matter most to me right now?
- Am I living in alignment with my core values?
- What brings me genuine joy and fulfillment?
- How can I contribute positively to my community?

Time & priorities
- Am I spending my time on what truly matters to me?
- What distractions could I minimise?
- How can I create more space for what energises me?

Legacy & impact
- How do I want to be remembered by those around me?
- What impact am I making in the lives of others?
- What small actions can I take today to live more intentionally?

We hope these are helpful - happy reflecting!
