World Gratitude Day 2024: Whom and what HR leaders are most thankful for

Let’s take the day as an opportunity to reflect on, and express gratitude for, the good things and amazing people we have encountered.

Introduced in 1965 by Indian spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy during a Thanksgiving dinner at the United Nations, World Gratitude Day has been celebrated on 21 September every year.

This day serves as an opportunity for us to reflect on, and express gratitude for, the good things and amazing people we have encountered in our lives.

The value of gratitude is particularly significant in the HR sector – an industry which is all about people.

Whether to a manager who nurtures people, a mentor who passes on their wisdom and knowledge, a colleague who works shoulder-by-shoulder every day, or a team who strives for the same goals, a little gratitude is a clear affirmation of dedication and momentum to go forward.

On the eve of this special occasion, HRO's Tracy Chan talks to HR leaders from different sectors, and shares their thank-you messages to whom they are most thankful for throughout their HR journey.

Meanwhile, HRO would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our interviewees, contributors, as well as readers for your invaluable support! Your trust and confidence are not only motivating us but also giving special meaning to what we are doing!

Most importantly, gratitude is not a one-day thing – let’s be grateful for whatever good or less fortunate happen to us and keep striving!

Sara Ho, Group Chief Human Resources Officer, Jebsen & Co.

I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our former Managing Director, Mr. Helmuth Hennig, who entrusted me with the role of Jebsen Group HR Director in 2017. This opportunity allowed me to formulate and implement my HR vision at Jebsen Group, expanding my career horizons. His trust has been invaluable to me.

Jo Chung, HR Lead - HK & Macau, MSD

I’m truly grateful for my manager, whose coaching and guidance have been invaluable. Her leadership inspires me daily, providing a role model in my HR journey. She fosters growth, encourages integrity, and exemplifies the values I aspire to uphold in both my career and personal life.

Florence Tsang, experienced HK-based HR leader

I am thankful for Roger Young, who gave me the freedom to experiment with AI for HR. He consistently responded with empowerment. His leadership has had a lasting impact on me, and I am also modelling his generosity by giving my team the space to learn from their own experiences.

Winnie Lee, regional talent development professional

I'm profoundly grateful for the diverse teams I've worked with throughout my HR journey. Their unique perspectives have broadened my understanding of collaboration and inclusivity. This experience has not only enhanced my professional capabilities but also deepened my appreciation for different cultures, enriching my personal life and shaping my values.
