Changes to Singapore's Cabinet, and other appointments as of 18 Jan 2024

Chee Hong Tat takes over from S Iswaran as Minister for Transport. He has also been appointed as Second Minister for Finance.

The Prime Minister’s Office of Singapore has announced in a press release that there will be a change in the Cabinet line-up alongside other political appointments, effective 18 January 2024 (Thursday).

The changes are as follow:

  1. Chee Hong Tat has been promoted to full Minister, taking over the role of Minister for Transport from former minister S Iswaran. Minister Chee has also been appointed Second Minister for Finance.
  2. Grace Fu, currently Minister for Sustainability & Environment, has concurrently assumed the role of Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations.

This change in appointment of Ministers comes in light of the resignation of S Iswaran on 18 January. In a statement, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong shared that Iswaran had turned in his resignation as a Cabinet minister and a member of the People’s Action Party (PAP) after the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) had given him formal notice of the charges.

According to the statement, Iswaran also informed PM Lee of his resignation as Member of Parliament (MP) for the West Coast Group Representation Constituency in a letter on 16 January 2024. He added that he will return all monies received by way of salary as Minister, and allowances as MP from the commencement of the CPIB’s investigations in July 2023.

PM Lee has accepted and acknowledged Iswaran’s resignation and decision to return the monies.
