How long office workers spend commuting in Bangkok, Melbourne and New York

With a growing number of companies issuing return-to-office mandates, employees are expected to make the commute to the office more often.

New York and Bangkok have the longest average commute times, with full-time office workers travelling nearly 10 hours each week to get to their place of work. The US, however, dominates the ranking, with Washington and Chicago having an average weekly commute time of 9 hours and 30 minutes.

On the other end of the scale, Vienna (Austria) has the shortest daily commute time of 46 minutes which equates to 3 hours and 50 minutes per week for full-time office workers and 1 hour and 32 minutes per week for hybrid workers.

Meanwhile, in Luxembourg City, those employees who do commute to work tend to spend just 26 minutes per day doing so, which is 12 minutes less than the 38 minute average across all global cities analysed.

The results are part of a wider study on the best cities for workplace productivity by Business Name Generator has revealed the cities with the longest average commute times for full-time and hybrid office workers.

The research also explored which cities have the longest and shortest working weeks around the world.

The shortest working week is found in Vienna, Austria, with employees tending to work around 29.5 hours, on average. Closely following is Paris, France with 30.1 hours, and Amsterdam, The Netherlands with 31.3 hours. Amsterdam and Vienna came in sixth and seventh respectively.

On the other end of the spectrum, employees in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, both in the UAE, tend to work an average of 52.6 hours a week. Following behind is Doha, Qatar with workers averaging 48 hours per week.
