Long waits ahead: Travellers to expect heavy traffic at land checkpoints over the Good Friday long weekend

Travellers crossing the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints by non-Malaysia registered cars are advised to ensure your Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP), Autopass card, and insurance are valid.

Travellers heading across the causeway this Good Friday long weekend (17 to 21 April 2025) should brace for heavy traffic at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints.

According to Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, this period is typically the busiest of the year. During the recent Hari Raya Puasa weekend (28 to 31 March), over 1.8mn people crossed the checkpoints — with a record 538,000 crossings in a single day. Some car travellers waited up to three hours due to traffic tailbacks from Malaysia.

What to note before you go:

General reminders:

  • Passports must have at least six months’ validity.
  • Short-term visitors must submit their Singapore Arrival Card (SGAC) with health declaration via the MyICA app within three days before arrival.
  • Permanent Residents to ensure that their Re-Entry Permit has been transferred to the new passport.
  • Long-Term Pass holders should update ICA or MOM on any passport changes before re-entry.
  • Do not bring in prohibited or controlled items.

For motorists:

  • Check traffic updates before your journey (LTA’s One Motoring, ICA’s Facebook/X).
  • Use MyICA QR codes for quicker immigration clearance.
  • Do not queue-cut — offenders will be turned away or made to re-queue.

For bus passengers:

  • Use MyICA QR codes for quicker clearance at automated and Special Assistance Lanes (SALs).
  • SALs are also available for wheelchair users and families with young children below the age of six.

For foreign vehicle drivers:

  • Ensure your Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP), Autopass card, and insurance are valid.
  • Clear any outstanding fines to avoid being denied entry.

Consider public transport

To avoid congestion, cross-border buses are a good alternative. Check the MyTransport.SG app or operator websites for operating hours and timings.

Travelling this long weekend? A little prep can go a long way and help make your journey less stressful. Safe travels!
