Malaysia proposes designating next year as the ASEAN Year of Skills 2025

The proposal aims to advance significant labour sector reforms in 2025.

Malaysia's Secretary-General of the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA), Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud has put forth the country's proposal to designate 2025 as the ASEAN Year of Skills.

The proposal, as cited by ⁠Bernama, aims to advance significant labour sector reforms in 2025. It includes a detailed concept paper, was submitted to ASEAN Secretariat for consideration by all member states.

Malaysia is set to assume ASEAN leadership from Laos at the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, scheduled for 8-11 October 2024. 

In June 2024, Minister of Human Resources Steven Sim first expressed the country's aspiration to organise the ASEAN Year of Skills 2025 in collaboration with the International Labour Organization, a move he said will pave the way for KESUMA, as well as its departments and agencies, including the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), to spearhead training and skills initiatives aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of the ASEAN workforce.
