The Melaka government is looking to build 40 Centralised Labour Quarters (CLQs) by 2025, to accommodate more than 40,000 foreign workers, according to a report by Bernama.
As cited in the report, Ngwe Hee Sem, State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee Chairman noted on Monday (7 August 2023) that the current total CLQs, which stands at 15 and can house up to 9,359 workers, is insufficient given the number of foreign workers working in Melaka, especially within the industrial sector, where up to 63,500 workers currently are.
Therefore, he shared, the state government, through the Labour Department, is in discussions with developers to construct the targetted number of CLQs.
As further reported by Bernama, Chairman Ngwe said the addition of the new CLQs comes in line with the Melaka government's push to attract more investments in the state, noting that "having adequate workers' quarters protects their welfare, which in turn will increase productivity."
In June this year, Malaysia's Selangor State Development Corporation celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony of a CLQ in Bandar Sultan Suleiman, which is expected to be completed in three years, with the award date set for 2024 and the certificate of completion in 2028.
Occupying an area of 4.35 acres, the quarters will consist of 336 fully-furnished units. These units will be equipped with essential amenities such as light fixtures, fans, electric stoves, tables and chairs, beds, mattresses, pillows, and lockers.
